I was in Chu Lai from July 66 to August 67. My memory of that time is kind of fuzzy, ! was with Supply Co. When I got there my tent was right next to the grass EM club. I have a picture of my tent that shows the back end of the club. I was later moved to a tent up on the side of a hill that was cut out to put our tents. I think we were the last ones to get a hut built for us.
I remember hearing shots one night & was later told that a black marine had been drinking some liquor laced with formaldehyde he got in the ville. I was told after drinking most of it he stood up in his hut & said he was super human & started shooting. The best I can remember is he killed one or two & wounded several. I was told he was a good guy & they were all good friends. Guess the juice just screwed him up. If I remember correctly he did not commit suicide and after the shootings sat down on his cot & was subdued by others. I do not know what happened to him.
I can't remember when this happened and I don't know if its true or not as I did not know any of the marines involved. All I do remember is hearing shots in the area it was said to have happened.
I remember an incident that happened in Chu Lai, while is was there, one marine shot up his hooch, I can not remember how many were killed and injured, could this be the same incident and the year be 1967 not 1966? I have repressed this memory, until until I read about this. I hope this may help get the date right.
There was 12 of us in the that hootch. I was the 12th, but because I had been medivaced out, I was not present nor wounded. When I returned, they told me that all eleven guys had either been wounded or killed, and I guess I blacked it out untill now. I am still looking for the others. Thank you for giving me the first info to start looking and perhaps remembering.
